ABOUT:
Quiz Bowl is an academic question and answer team competition. Teams may have up to twelve members. Only four of the players at a time are actually seated at a playing table which is equipped with a buzzer system at the senior high level. Junior high now plays with five players at the table. Players try to answer questions correctly in each of the game's four rounds.
During the first round, individual players attempt to buzz in and answer toss-up questions. Correct answers earn 10 points. If an individual fails to answer correctly, then an individual on the other team is given a chance to buzz in and answer the question correctly and earn the 10 points. Only one answer per team is allowed for each question. There are 20 questions in this round.
The second round, called the bonus round, consists of up to ten toss-up questions and four, four-part bonus questions. If a player answers a toss-up question correctly, the team earns ten points and the opportunity to answer four bonus questions. Teams earn five points for each of these bonus questions that is answered correctly. Collaboration is allowed only on bonus questions. The round ends when all four, four-part bonus questions have been asked or when all ten alloted toss-ups have been asked.
Round three is the 60-second category round. Three different categories of ten questions each are available. Each team chooses a category with the team that is behind at the half choosing first. Each team has 60 seconds to answer as many of the questions in their category as possible. Answering all ten questions correctly earns the team a 20 point bonus. Teams are also given a chance to answer any questions missed or passed by the other team.
The fourth round is a repeat of round one with 20 toss-ups worth 10 points each. The team with the most total points wins the game. In the case of a tie, an overtime of five toss-up questions is conducted. If a tie still exists, sudden death overtime is announced and the winner of the match is the first team to an answer a toss-up question correctly.
